Regulating Circadian Rhythm Through Time Based Lighting
As older adults find themselves spending more time indoors, their lack of exposure to natural light can disrupt their circadian rhythm and result in sleep problems (difficulty falling asleep, waking up in the middle of the night, or waking up too early and being unable to fall back to sleep). Over time, these sleep issues can affect a person's overall health, safety, and quality of life.
To support a regular circadian rhythm, Philips Hue smart LED lights can recreate natural light automatically. Using a time-based light routine, colors and brightness evolve from "energize" (morning bright white), transition to "bright" (mid-day warm tones), and fade to "relax" (soft evening tones). Lighting can also be customized to users' preferences (brightness, length of cycle, or colors) to provide the right amount of lighting for each moment during the day.
Philips Hue lights are widely available, come in different styles, and are compatible with nearly all smart assistants. With nearly 70% of those over the age of 70 having some type of sleep disorder, resolving circadian rhythm issues is an important first step towards better health and could be as simple as changing a light bulb.
