Circadian lighting (CL) refers to the use of LED lights to simulate a healthy circadian rhythm (the body's biological rhythm as light changes from morning to night). When CL tones and light intensity are tuned properly, it can positively affect a person's health, alertness, and productivity. Beyond those benefits, however, scientists are also learning that CL may lessen the symptoms of Alzheimer's (improved sleep health, reduced depression, and decreased agitation) and can potentially reduce falls (increased brightness improved daytime alertness when movements were likely and decreased brightness with warmer tones to promote relaxation and less movement).
Coelux, an innovative leader in lighting, has developed technology to artificially reproduce natural light along with the imagery of the sun and sky. Stylishly designed and nearly indistinguishable from a skylight/window, Coelux lighting not only creates a natural sense of openness and space but its brightness and color changes over the course of a day can help to synchronize the body’s circadian clock (consistently and regardless of weather or time of year).
While Coelux products provide a stunning visual experience to any room, the technology behind the illusion is expensive and is best suited for specific applications. Less expensive options are readily available (using a color-changing LED bulb and a CL routine), but they can't recreate the imagery and movement that makes Coelux appealing. With CL technology maturing and new competitors appearing, the hope is that a similar and more affordable CL solution will be available soon.
